90 Day Addiction Reset
“We can lift ourselves out of ignorance, we can find ourselves as creatures of excellence and intelligence and skill. We can be free! We can learn to fly!” – From Jonathan Livingston Seagull, by Richard Bach
The 90 Day Addiction Reset is a period of committed abstinence, in which you have a chance to disconnect from your old way of life and reconnect with yourself. Reset is a time to step back and reflect upon what you really want. It’s a time for upgrading your way of thinking and allowing space for necessary emotional healing. Most of all, it is a time of connecting with who you are and what your life stands for.
After Reset, you may decide to remain abstinent or explore the possibility of healthy moderation. Healthy moderation is not possible for everyone. Those who find a way to live in healthy relationship with what they were once addicted to are the ones who resolve their underlying issues to a degree where they have mental clarity and emotional autonomy.
Most often, change means letting go of the things that no longer serve us, so as to create space for something new. I help my clients maintain clarity and focus during this time of transition so that they stay on track with the process of reconnecting with themselves.
Although some aspects of Reset may sound challenging, experience tells me that positive change happens in most people’s lives through an on-going series of small incremental steps that build momentum in the right direction. Like so many things in life, it is the simple shifts that bring about the most remarkable results.
The art is in knowing what needs to change and when. Change cannot be forced through willpower. Change happens as a result of deep inner work, that updates our ways of thinking, feeling, and being in the world. When caught up in the cycle of addiction, it is not easy to trust our decision making. In the cycle of addiction, there is not enough emotional or mental stability to make clear and fully conscious choices. Reset brings a period of stability, along with the clarity and awareness needed for self-reflection.
Through Reset, you can come to know which values support you in being at your best. You can also know which of your goals are worth prioritising, and which inner conflicts need resolving for those goals to be reachable.
As a wise man once said, “True refinement seeks simplicity”. Creating change happens as a result of giving attention to that which truly nourishes your growth. At the same time, it’s important to process and heal whatever sabotages you in your efforts to change. That’s how to create a meaningful life.
