Emotional Mastery is a 6 week deep therapy process aimed at helping people to gain awareness of their emotions and how to skilfully navigate them.
In a world that celebrates IQ but places little value on EQ, we are conditioned to foster the more positive emotional states, and distance ourselves from negative ones. Because of this, we tend to avoid difficult emotions such as anger, fear, and shame, even though, these feelings are often valuable signposts towards a deeper understanding of ourselves.
I have spent many years exploring different ways of understanding my emotions and how they function. One thing I can say with absolute certainty is tha the old idea that emotion follows thought, is not accurate most of the time. Of course, if we have negative thinking, we will feel the impact of it, but there is much deeper territory to explore here!
I struggled with difficult emotional states for many years. I had very little emotional regulation, and my feelings would swing wildly between anxiety, fear, shame, and many other difficult feelings.
Meditation initially helped me detach enought to be able to witness my feelings without becoming entangled in them. The next stage was to get into the experience of them. This meant merging with my felt experience while remaining conscious and aware of what I was doing. It was no easy task, but over time I built tolerance and my threshold expanded considerably to the point where I was able to be fully present in an emotional storm while at the same time being able to think and act clearly.
I also learnt how to navigate the layers of my emotional inner world, to the point of being able to drop through and even transcend them. The final stage of emotional mastery was learening how to listen and be guided by my feelings so that I could come to a deeper understanding of myself.
The process is unique to each individual and cannot be outlined easily in words. We each have our own personal history of childhood, family dynamics, adverse experiences, breakups, people, places, and things, all of which impacted us. We also have what happened within us as a result of these things. We struggle with different things, and we repond to our struggles differently via patterns of growth or protection. My work is to help my clients recognise, understand their patterns, heal their pain, and come home to themselves.
